The White Egret Dance

The  White Egret dance, ritualized in Japan as sagimai, is a wonderful performance seen in Japanese temples at festivals and has been practiced by liturgical dancers for about 500 years.

While many cultures have their mythological creatures that they invocate on different occasions, the Japanese tradition is that ladies dress up as the elegant white egrets that are often seen in Japanese rice fields or rivers and mimic the birds and the move in a synchronized group.

The white slender costumes and statuary figures where shot by Tokyobling’s Blog and I found the images so splendid, I wanted to share them with you.
